Popular loop trail in the Upper Bavarian Forest Nature Park, Bavaria.
The trail starts at the parking lot in Laichstätt. You walk in the direction of the pond area with the Laichstätter pond and the small and large Rötelseeweiher. This is the core of the "Regentalaue" nature reserve. The approximately 40-hectare body of water, together with the Regen river and the floodplain meadows, forms an extremely valuable habitat for flora and fauna: over 500 different plant species are native here. As an important resting and breeding area, the Regentalaue has been on the EU list of European bird sanctuaries since 1988. After observing nature in the pond area, follow a meadow path to the road, on which you stay for a short while until the path branches off again into a field path. At the next information board, the route changes to the right. Through a piece of forest you reach species-rich wet meadows with a few smaller ponds. Afterwards you have a wonderful view of Thierlstein Castle. However, there is a branch to the right at the edge of the nature reserve in the direction of Laichstätt. You will soon reach the starting point.
Highlights of the hike:
- Laichstätter pond
- Small and large Rötelseeweiher
- Regentalaue nature reserve
- rare animal, plant and bird species
- View of Thierlstein Castle
