Maximiliansweg Stage 19: Sonnenalm - Hochgernhaus

This route is stage 19 of the Maximiliansweg, a long-distance trail through Germany, beginning at the Sonnenalm on the Kampenwand and ending at the Hochgernhaus. The path traverses the north flank of the Kampenwand past the Steinlingalm, crosses the ridge of the Piesenhausener Hochalm, and descends into Marquartstein via Niederfels. After crossing the Tiroler Ache River, a steep climb through forests and alpine pastures leads up to the Hochgernhaus. Overnight stays are accommodated at the Sonnenalm at the start or the Hochgernhaus alpine lodge at the end; wild camping is strictly prohibited along this mountain section. Hikers must pack a reliable water filter to treat surface water from natural springs, as high ridge sections are dry. Both trailheads are accessible via public transit networks, including the Kampenwand Cable Car and regional buses in Marquartstein, with route schedules available at https://www.bayerische-oberlandbahn.de.
