This is a great hike and a relatively easy one, which makes it a good one to start off in the area. I would recommend only doing this in the best weather conditions, it took me three attempts because the snow made it impossible for me to summit in January (yes, I tried this in January during record-setting snow levels ...) but also still in early April. Finally, the trails were actually passable (early June). Some more points: #1 Do this one early as there will be lots of people in the summit area starting at around 9.30am because of the Herzogstandbahn. I reached the summit at 9am (started at 7am), which was right at the point before the crowds started showing up. #2 I took an alternative trail starting at the Kesselberg Pass (Kesselbergstrasse) which I think (?) saves you about 150ft elevation gain. Parking is very limited there, so again, being there early pays off. #3 Make sure to also hike up to the summit of the Martinskopf, which is the peak right between Herzogstand summit and Herzogstandhaus. It's only about 15 minutes more and I personally liked the view at the summit more than from Herzogstand itself.

Fantastic views all the way along - especially at the top! Quite steep in some points but well worth it. Great if you’ve got walking boots and stick.

This trail took me a bit by surprise - it's quite steep and it goes up throughout the hike (no slowdown). Being in a forest for the most part, it is also not the most exciting at first, but the view at the end - the last 15-or-so minutes of the trail, plus the summit of course, are absolutely worth it - really beautiful. (On the conditions: I went at the end of March. Most of the snow was gone, but there was a section taking about 25 minutes close to the end with lots of snow which was extremely slippery.)

Super crowded on the weekends, went on a Sunday, with limited parking but great views and a nice intro to the Bavarian Alps.

Challenging but incredible views await you. My wife and I chose this for our last day in Germany and we are so glad we did. You can also hike along the ridge line near the summit for a variety of other hikes, which we did as well.

A great hike with views to make it worthwhile. if you don't take the gondola up or down make sure up walk to it as the best view of the basin can be found from it rather than higher up (peak was fogged in the day i was there). Most of the pics here don't to the lake justice (including mine, phone died before i went to check out the gondola), most beautiful alpine lake I've seen.

Lovely view - great walk! You need to bring some condition with you and don't forget water in summer or hot tea in winter to drink :)

I did this hike in March, with a German friend. If you want to have an authentic Bavarian hike, this is where I would start. You can choose to begin your hike with a ride in a cable car half way up the mountain. This will get you past the very steep first part of the trail. The first part of the trail is very steep, and was really hard to climb in some places, due to the ice. There is a German restaurant / lodge halfway up the mountain. The food is outstanding. The view from the top of Herzogstand is wonderful. I will be back to do this trail again in the spring time.
