From Lake Kochelsee to Lake Walchensee via Kotalm

This varied route connects two of the most famous Upper Bavarian lakes by climbing up into the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. The trail leads from the low-lying Kochel basin at Kochelsee up into the wooded slopes and over the alpine pastures of the Kotalm before dropping down to the turquoise Walchensee. The route runs along a mixture of wide forest paths and narrow, rooty mountain trails that require surefootedness. A key highlight is the view from the saddle area down to Lake Walchensee, which is often referred to as the "Bavarian Caribbean" due to its location and color. With a bit of luck, chamois can be spotted in the steep mixed mountain forests, while the typical brown cattle graze on the pastures of the Kotalm in summer. The route is challenging due to the altitude difference and requires a solid physical condition for the constant ups and downs.
