This world-famous route includes exposed climbing over the narrow ridge that connects the Hocheck, the Mittelspitze 2,713 m and the Südspitze 2,712 m. Wire ropes provide support in some places, but large parts of the terrain in grade II difficulty remain unsecured and require concentrated walking. The descent into the Watzmannkar is notoriously long and hard on the knees, with the terrain changing from steep rock and scree to the limestone valley of the Watzmann-Gries. The Watzmann is deeply rooted in legend and is said to be a petrified king with his family. This tour is classified as a T5/T6 alpine hike and should only be undertaken in stable weather conditions by people with extensive mountain experience.
