Popular loop in the Upper Bavarian Forest Nature Park, Bavaria.
The southern mountain ranges of Bad Kötzting with their charming views: Along the Ludwigstraße and past the orientation board on the Ludwigsberg the route first reaches the Schwedenstein, which commemorates the destruction of Kötzting during the Swedish War. After a moderate ascent along shady forest edges and forest paths, it reaches the Höllensteinsee Lake with its impressive power station (boat hire), which was built between 1923 and 1925 as the first dam in the Bavarian Forest. From there, the hiking trail leads uphill to the villages of Buchberg and Sackenried (14-Nothelfer-Kirche) with its well-known pilgrimage church, surrounded by meadows and forests. Many wayside crosses and Stations of the Cross line the hiking trail, which leads back to the starting point in Bad Kötzting via the festival theatre on Ludwigsberg. Alternatively, the return goes via Wettzell with its St Laurentius Church and the hamlet of Leckern. This is where the hiking trail meets the Hufeisenweg.
