Fischbachau: Birkenstein - Wendelstein

This alpine mountain hike leads from the idyllic pilgrimage site of Birkenstein (Fischbachau) up to one of the most famous peaks in the Bavarian Alps, the Wendelstein (1,838 m). The trail opens up the scenically impressive western side of the mountain and follows a challenging mix of shady forest paths, open alpine trails and rocky summit paths. A central highlight is the contrast between the baroque splendour of the Birkenstein pilgrimage chapel at the starting point and the high alpine panorama at the summit, which on a clear day stretches from the Grossglockner to the foothills of the Alps. In the mixed mountain forests and on the limestone cliffs, you can observe chamois, alpine choughs and rare alpine flowers such as gentian. The route requires a very good level of fitness and absolute surefootedness due to the metres in altitude.
