The Birkenstein pilgrimage chapel is the start and end of this hike to the main summit of the Breitenstein (east summit). For an enjoyable and safe hiking adventure in the Mangfall mountains, you should not only bring sturdy shoes, but also sure-footedness and a head for heights - although the ascent of the Breitenstein is classified as technically easy, the route contains a few exposed spots and rough paths. After around 1.5 miles, the first hiking highlight is the Breitensteinfensterl, which is reached via narrow, sometimes barely visible paths. The mighty rock arch offers a unique view of the Leitzachtal. The last part of the ascent then leads to the east summit of the Breitenstein.
Some of the trails are not signposted, so a good sense of direction and a GPS-enabled navigation device are helpful.
