Best trails in Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park
Saltfjellet-Svartisen is Norway's most diverse national park, extending across central Norway from the west coast to the Swedish border. This national park offers something for everyone, including glaciers, mountain peaks, plateaus, and valleys. Notable landmarks include Mount Saltfjellet, Svartisenbreen Glacier, and various Sami cultural sites. Ølfjellet is the tallest peak, standing at 1,751 meters.
The western region is characterized by deep fjords and narrow valleys, featuring the mainland's largest glaciers, which can be viewed from the Engenbreen and Austerdalsisen glacier arms. In the south, the park encompasses lowlands filled with dense spruce and birch forests. The northern and eastern areas highlight the Saltfjellet mountain range, known for its rugged peaks, wide valleys, and low-growing flora.
For centuries, the Sami population has practiced reindeer herding, making reindeer, after moose, the largest animal in the park. In spring, reindeer migrate from their winter pastures at the Swedish border to coastal pastures, returning in the fall. The park's forested valleys also support moose and roe deer, while lynx and wolverines are the largest predators.
The calcareous bedrock contributes to a rich flora, featuring several rare species. The traditional reindeer herding areas also contain a unique collection of Sami cultural monuments.
Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park offers numerous trails for hiking and outdoor activities. The DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) maintains an extensive network of trails and provides many self-service and unstaffed cabins within or just outside the park.
