This route is a popular panoramic hiking trail above the mountaineering village of Ramsau and is known as the "brine route". This is a section of the overall route, which was built by engineer Georg Friedrich von Reichenbach on behalf of the Bavarian King Max I from 1816 to 1817 after the formerly independent prince provost Berchtesgaden had become Bavarian in 1810. He built the 29-kilometer brine pipeline from the Berchtesgaden salt mine via Ramsau to the salt works in Reichenhall. He had to overcome height differences of up to 356 meters with the pump he had developed. The brine pipeline was in operation for a total of 144 years, it was not shut down until 1927. Nowadays, the well-preserved and above all almost flat path that leads along the former route is ideal for walking. Above all, the popular witnesses of the past are a short walk-in tunnel and wooden tubes, called "dykes", through which the brine once flowed.
