Walyunga National Park is located behind the Darling Scrap in Western Australia. Trail reviews for Walyunga National Park
Echidna Trail Review – Walyunga National Park I recently tackled the Echidna Trail at Walyunga National Park, and it was an unforgettable adventure—perfect for the 60+ hiking community and solo hikers alike! I covered 10.6 km in 3 hours and 15 minutes, with temperatures soaring between 35°C and 38°C. Despite the heat, the trail delivered an exhilarating mix of natural beauty and physical challenge. Trail Highlights: Well-Marked Path: The trail is clearly signposted, making navigation straightforward—ideal for solo hikers who prefer the freedom of hiking without worry. Challenging Yet Rewarding: A balanced mix of moderate climbs and flat sections keeps the hike engaging without being too demanding. It’s a solid workout with just the right amount of intensity. Stunning Scenery: The trail offers breathtaking views of rugged bushland, granite outcrops, and the picturesque Swan River, making every step worthwhile. Good-to-Know Facts: Blistering Heat: I faced peak temps of 38°C, so come well-prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat. Starting early is key to avoiding the midday heat. Park Fees: Entry is AUD 17.00 per vehicle, payable at the park entrance. Time Restrictions: Gates close at 5 PM, and cars cannot be left overnight. Plan your hike with enough buffer time to avoid a last-minute rush. Final Thoughts: The Echidna Trail is also must-do for anyone seeking a well-marked, scenic, and moderately challenging hike. It’s especially great for solo adventurers and active 60+ hikers. Just be heat-smart, pace yourself, and enjoy the incredible landscapes Walyunga has to offer! August/ September is a great time of the year to do this walk as the water was flowing and alot of the native trees were flowering. I recommend doing the hike clockwise. It's a steady incline looking out over the Walyunga NP followed by a rapid decline overlooking the Avon River and you finish the walk along the river. The views were gorgeous the whole way around.
Beautiful well marked trail. We went anti-clockwise to get the steep part over and done with, much more gradual descent on the return half of the loop going that way. Water flowing at Syd’s Rapids, lots of birds and wildflowers around. We were the first ones in the car park at 845 on Thursday morning and didn’t see anyone until we’d almost finished. Took us 2.5hrs with some pausing for photos and a quick snack half way. Highly recommend Walyunga NP.
