Wernigerode - Ilse Wasserfälle (Waterfalls)

This route connects the region of Wernigerode with the Ilse Valley (Ilsetal), following the course of the Ilse river towards the Upper and Lower Ilse Falls. The landscape is defined by the river’s descent over granite rock formations, creating a series of cascades rather than a single vertical drop. The trail surface varies significantly, transitioning from compacted gravel forest roads on the approach to narrower, root-filled, and stony paths directly alongside the water. Surrounding the river, the vegetation consists primarily of deciduous beech forests which provide canopy cover throughout the lower sections. The area is also associated with the annual Harz-Gebirgslauf, a major trail running event in the region.
