Saar-Hunsrück-Steig Stage 23: Morshausen - Oppenhausen

This route follows stage 23 of the certified Saar-Hunsrück-Steig premium trail, connecting Morshausen with Oppenhausen on a historically rich and stunning section. The first part of this 16 km (10-mile) hike features panoramic vistas toward the Eifel mountains and views of the medieval Ehrenburg Castle. After descending into Ehrenburgertal, an ascent leads to the castle, which is open for tours. Beautiful paths then guide hikers into the Ehrbach Valley, home to numerous historic mills. Shortly past the Eckmühle mill, the wildly romantic Ehrbachklamm gorge begins, marking the highlight of the trail. The path winds along the stream over narrow tracks, stepping stones, bridges, and cable-secured sections past rushing waterfalls. Following a break at the Daubisbergermühle mill, the trail climbs steeply via switchbacks toward Schöneck Castle. Scenic viewpoints reward the effort up to the Windhausen plateau, before the route levels out toward the destination in Oppenhausen. Surefootedness and sturdy footwear are required.
