Moselsteig Trail Stage 22: Löf - Kobern-Gondorf

This route follows stage 22 of the Moselsteig, connecting Löf with the historic town of Kobern-Gondorf on a culturally fascinating and panoramic section. The hike leads via Alken to one of the oldest fortresses in the Moselle region, the imposing 12th-century Thurant Castle (Burg Thurant). Following a challenging ascent along the historic "Sieben-Fußfälle" Stations of the Cross, you will reach the Bleidenberg high plateau. In addition to a spectacular ridge path, a journey into prehistoric times awaits you here: a faithful reconstruction of a Homo erectus campsite featuring a massive iron sculpture of a prehistoric straight-tusked forest elephant. The renowned viewpoints of Hitzlay and the Mönch-Felix-Hütte offer magnificent vistas before the trail descends via steep switchbacks and crosses the Moselgoldbrücke into the destination of Kobern-Gondorf. Overnight stays are available in hotels, guesthouses, and traditional wineries in Löf, Alken, or Kobern-Gondorf; wild camping is prohibited. Refreshments can be found in the villages along the route and inside the tavern at Thurant Castle. Transport is excellently provided via the train stations in Löf and Kobern-Gondorf on the Moselle line (RE 1 / RB 81), which offer hourly connections toward Koblenz and Trier; schedules and transit information can be found at https://www.vrt-info.de.
