Idyllic, varied circular hiking trail near Rheinbach, North Rhine-Westphalia.
On the 9.8 km long circular route through the species-rich forests of the “Rheinbacher Wald” and “Tomberg” nature reserves, you can discover rare, heat-loving plants such as black nettle and service. You also pass the forest chapel and the “Black Cross”. A few medium climbs are always rewarded with beautiful views. The highlight is the castle ruins with a view of the summit from Tomberg over the Drachenfelser Ländchen and the Kottenforst to the distant Siebengebirge. Around the year 900, Count Palatine Hermann built his manor high on the volcanic cone of the Tomberg. Today there are the restored remains of the keep and the castle well, which was once 46 m deep. After an eventful history, robber barons lived on the Tomburg in the 14th century, and from here they attacked commercial transports on Aachen-Frankfurter Heerstrasse.
