Pilgerweg Bistum Essen 4: Gelsenkirchen - Essener Dom

The diocese of Essen has had its own pilgrimage route since summer 2018. Now you can make a pilgrimage across the Ruhr diocese on over 200 kilometers. Five marked, very different routes lead from the Sauerland, the Rhine, the northern Ruhr area or the south of Essen to the Essen Cathedral - or in the opposite direction. The Gelsenkirchen - Essen section crosses the northeast of the Essen diocese. It runs through the Gelsenkirchen-Hassel district, along large industrial plants and on to Gladbeck. From there it goes to the moated castle Wittringen with its extensive parks and diverse leisure activities. In the further course of the route, the Emscherkulturpark impressively documents the change in the industrial area. At Haus Ripshorst, the Gelsenkirchen - Essen pilgrimage route connects with the Bottrop - Oberhausen - Essen section and runs from there on a common route to Essen city center and the cathedral. The route has no fixed (daily) stages. Everyone is invited to discover the route as time, interests and their own physical condition allow - and perhaps to embark on an "inner" path in addition to the outer one. The pilgrimage route is marked with a uniform sign in both directions.
