This epic route was designed for the extreme hiking event "Megamarsch" and leads right through the heart of the Ruhr metropolis. The path connects the cities of Mönchengladbach and Duisburg (start/finish points vary by edition) and explores an impressive variety of urban and natural spaces. The course follows a mixture of asphalted cycle paths, reinforced canal bank paths, former railway lines, and forest trails. A central highlight is the "industrial nature": the path leads past imposing relics of the steel and mining era that nature is slowly reclaiming. Along the canals and in the parks, grey herons, cormorants, and—especially in the evening hours—foxes can be brilliantly observed. Due to its length of 100 kilometers, the route is an extreme physical challenge but remains technically straightforward thanks to its flat profile.
