• Partial Closure Kupferdreh Railway Bridge: The Kupferdreh railroad bridge between Essen-Heisingen and Essen-Kupferdreh will be closed from January 23, 2026, through February 2027 due to construction work. The alternate route continues along the riverbank over the next bridge. It goes to the beautiful Baldeneysee, known to insiders for the (almost) annual SMAG Sundance Open Air Festival. However, outside of the festival season, you don't notice anything on the banks of this dreamlike backdrop. Start is between the Stadtgarten and the Grugapark in Essen. It goes in a westerly direction through the nature reserve Im Schellenberger Wald and NSG Heisinger Ruhraue, at the southernmost point of the hike also along the bird sanctuary Heisinger Bogen. Here you reach the Ruhr, which is the water source of Lake Baldeney, as this is the largest of the six reservoirs of the mighty river. In the curve at the lake, it then goes to the Baldeneysee curve view - a very popular photo opportunity. The hiking trail is relaxing due to the change from forest, water and a hilly landscape as well as the beautiful fresh air. The equally beautiful way back leads past the Wildgatter Heissiwald and the NSG Oefter Tal, via Kettwig and Zinsbachtal back to the starting point.
