The route starts at the car park at Spitzingsee. A little way along the picturesque shore of the lake, the route reaches the village of the same name, where there are refreshment stops. Following the path towards Rote Valepp, the route climbs steadily through the forest and across alpine meadows past the Schwarzkopf and Gleiselstein. Finally, it passes the Rotwand, and the route turns right to the Rotwandhaus. The Rotwandhaus is open all year round for refreshments and overnight stays.
The hike leads back along the same route. Back at Spitzingsee, the day can come to a wonderful end. The route is particularly recommended in the fall and is a classic of Munich's local mountains. However, it is also very popular as a result.
