SalzAlpenSteig: Prien am Chiemsee – Obertraun

• Closure of the East Bank Bicycle and Hiking Trail: The Ostufer Bicycle and Hiking Trail in Obertraun is currently closed due to a rockslide and is impassable. It is not yet known how long the closure will last. Please avoid the affected section. For more information, visit: https://www.obertraun.ooe.gv.at/Ostufer_Rad-_und_Wanderweg_-_Sperre_wegen_Felssturz This route follows the full SalzAlpenSteig, an 18-stage long-distance trail of about 240 kilometers running from Prien am Chiemsee in Bavaria to Obertraun on Lake Hallstatt in Upper Austria. From the Chiemsee foothills, it passes through wooded slopes, lakeside and river sections, historic salt routes, alpine pastures, and increasingly alpine terrain across the Berchtesgadener Land, Tennengau, and Salzkammergut; the stretch from Königssee to Bad Dürrnberg also includes two unlit tunnels. Overnight stays are typically in inns, huts, and village accommodations. Sturdy hiking boots and standard alpine gear are appropriate, water from natural sources should be filtered or treated, and transportation to and from the route can be planned here: https://www.oebb.at/ No general permit is required for the trail, though lodging reservations are a good idea during peak season.
