Best trails in Varangerhalvøya National Park
Varangerhalvøya National Park is known for its vast plateaus and unique landscape, formed before the last Ice Age. Located on the Varanger Peninsula along the Barents Sea, the park features plateaus, bogs, valleys, waterfalls, and rivers. Low-growing plants and rocky fields cover the plateaus, while cliffs are found near the shoreline and in steep canyons.
The park's flora is similar to other alpine tundra ecosystems but serves as a refuge for various animal species, including endangered ones. The tundra has minimal plant life, mainly scree fields and low grasses, while some areas feature willow and birch trees.
The park's relatively flat landscape makes travel easy, even with the absence of established trails. The best time for hiking is from July to September, while skiing is possible during the fall and spring. Since the park is located within the Arctic Circle, it receives little to no sunlight during the winter months.
