• Partial Closure Kupferdreh Railway Bridge: The Kupferdreh railroad bridge between Essen-Heisingen and Essen-Kupferdreh will be closed from January 23, 2026, through February 2027 due to construction work. The alternate route continues along the riverbank over the next bridge. The journey begins at the source of the Ruhr near Winterberg at an altitude of 674 meters. The trail leads through a landscape that transitions from dense forests and rolling hills to the industrial heart of the Ruhr region. The surfaces are almost entirely asphalted or consist of well-maintained gravel paths, making the route a preferred destination for endurance runners and cyclists. The route passes historic industrial sites and green corridors that have reclaimed former mining regions. Significant landmarks include Lake Baldeney in Essen and various converted railroad bridges. As the route covers an enormous distance, physical preparation for prolonged exertion is essential. The terrain is largely flat or sloping after the initial descent from the Sauerland, so the focus is on endurance rather than technical ability.
