Hermannsweg Stage 1: Rheine - Riesenbeck

This route is stage 1 of the Hermannsweg, a long-distance trail through the Teutoburger Wald. This specific section begins at the Rheine railway station and travels east to end in Riesenbeck near Hörstel. The path leads through the baroque old town of Rheine and along the Ems promenade before crossing under the railway and B481. Hikers transition from the urban center into the flat Münsterland park landscape, characterized by dense forests, meadows, and traditional timber-framed farms. Key cultural sites include the local history museum in Bevergern and the Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst with its historic mill and brewery. After crossing the Mittelland Canal, the stage concludes just before the gates of Hörstel. Overnight stays are available in local guesthouses in Rheine or Bevergern, as wild camping is strictly prohibited. Water is reliable in the towns, but hikers should carry supplies for the rural stretches.
