On weekends and public holidays, the 792 bus runs from Detmold to the Hermannsdenkmals car park. On weekdays the bus routes 703 (stop Kreuzweg) and 704 (stop Hiddeser Straße) go to Hiddesen, from where it is only a short walk to the Hermannsdenkmal. The hike begins at the Hermannsdenkmal, which commemorates Arminius the Cheruscan and the battle in the Teutoburg Forest. The German troops defeated the Roman invaders here in 9 AD. The memorial is open to visitors every day. The route continues to the Berlebeck Adlerwarte. Here you can marvel at over 180 large and small birds of prey. Free flight shows are held daily. There is also access to the panoramic terrace and the playground, as well as an information center. If you continue to follow the route, you have to overcome a small ascent before you can take a longer break at the Falkenburg. This is one of the largest medieval castles in Westphalia. The ruin has been rebuilt bit by bit since 2004. Finally, you pass the Externsteine if you continue to follow the route. These impressive rock formations tower 40 meters into the air in the valley between Wiembecke Horn-Bad Meinberg in Lippe and are among the most important natural and cultural highlights in Germany.
