Best trails in Wernigerode, Saxony-Anhalt

This route leads from Schierke via the Eckerlochstieg to the Brocken and back. It is one of the most popular hikes in the Harz and is the shortest route on the Brocken. The 500 meters of altitude covered will continue to rise over the course of the course and any effort will be offset by fantastic views. The route begins in the town of Schierke and leads first over the Sandbrinkstraße. To get to the Eckerlochstieg, turn right and follow the black Schluftwasser a bit before you turn right again. The last part of the ascent runs along the Brockenstraße. Down it goes on to Königshütte, where the path divides at the foot of the ruins of the royal castle. Warm and cold Bode unite shortly after the branch. Along the Königshütter transfer barrier, up into the forest to Rübeland with the famous stalactite caves and the still active open-pit mine leads us this way. Here we come back to the river, and follow it up and down on its way through alluvial forests and the Wendefurther dam, past the imposing Rappbode dam, the largest drinking water dam in Germany, to Altenbrak.Show more

The start is at the parking lot at the entrance to Schierke, from which the horse-drawn carriages to the Brocken also leave and Bahnhofstrasse branches off to the Brocken Railway station above Schierke. The signposting of the paths is a bit strange, at every intersection you will find new names that do not necessarily match the ones on the map. For example, we only found the Eckerlochsteig, which we actually wanted to go, at the top. But if you somehow go uphill, you arrive at the summit.Show more
