• Danger posed by deadwood in the lower part of the mountain trail: There is an increased risk of falling trees in the lower part of the mountain trail due to standing deadwood. We recommend taking the Erlsgrund and Winterbergstraße routes instead. Areas with a lot of standing deadwood should be avoided, especially in windy, rainy or snowy conditions. Scenic hiking trail in the Saxon Switzerland National Park, Saxony.
This route through Saxon Switzerland leads to the highlights of Carola Rock, Elbleitenweg and Goldsteinaussicht. You hike through the core area of Saxon Switzerland through the wild rock formations of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and have marvellous views from various vantage points.
From the starting point, the ferry landing stage in Schmilka, the trail initially leads steeply uphill via the Bersteig to the highest point for the time being at the Grosser Winterberg hostel (closed since 2016). From there, the trail leads over the Fremdenweg trail with only a few differences in altitude and finally over the Reitsteig trail to the first highlight of the route - the Carola Rock. There you can enjoy the magnificent panorama over the Schrammsteine and Falkenberg. The trail continues downhill for a while until it leads over the Roßsteig to the second highlight - the Goldsteinaussicht. There you can enjoy the view again until you return to the starting point on the Roßsteig and downhill via Bergsteig.
Highlights of the route:
- Sandstone formations
- Wonderful views
- Varied natural landscape
- Local flora and fauna
