The start of this route is on the banks of the Elbe in the city of Wehlen (www.stadt-wehlen.de). The certified Malerweg (www.saechsische-schweiz.de) brings you out of the city as you walk steadily uphill to the Steinernen Tisch. The beautiful path also runs through steps and is peppered with numerous viewpoints. At the abandoned restaurant "Steinernen Tisch" you can take a rest before walking about 30 minutes on the "Fremdenweg" to the world famous bastion. The magnificent rock formation can be reached via a sandstone bridge with breathtaking views of the Elbe Valley, which is almost 200m below. In addition, the remains of the rock castle of Neurathen can be visited for a small entrance fee. Leave the magnificent natural wonder and follow the signs to the Schweden holes. On this section of the route, expect many stairs, small rocky mountains ,and several rock arches. You will reach the idyllic Amselsee, where you may treat your feet to a break or take a relaxing rowboat ride on the lake. The marking "white-green-white" leads you over the Pionierweg and Höllengrund, slightly ascending in the direction of "Hockstein". Cross the road and follow the knot path to the "Hockstein". The "Hockstein" is a rock spur that rises more than 100m from the Polenztal. Over a steep and narrow iron staircase, descend through narrow rock passages and some wooden steps in the Polenztal. The Malerweg takes you steeply uphill to the town of Hohnstein (www.hohnstein.de) with the castle of the same name. Tip: A family hostel is set up in Hohnstein Castle (www.burg-hohnstein.de).
