Saar-Hunsrück-Steig Etappe 22: Schmausemühle - Morshausen

This route follows stage 22 of the certified Saar-Hunsrück-Steig premium trail, connecting the Schmausemühle with Morshausen on a challenging and wildly romantic section. The trail runs along narrow, natural paths directly through the spectacular Baybach Valley, which is also widely known as the Canyon of the Hunsrück. Characterized by rushing waters and imposing cliffs, this stretch requires absolute surefootedness, a head for heights, and sturdy footwear due to several cable-secured sections and minor rock scrambling. Along the stream bed, hikers can discover relics of historical slate mining as well as the striking Eselsche rock formation. An optional detour to the nearby historic Waldeck Castle ruins provides an interesting cultural highlight. After traversing the gorge, the steep final ascent up to the ridge demands good physical conditioning but rewards hikers with magnificent views over the entire Baybach Valley before reaching the destination of Morshausen. Cozy refreshments and accommodations are available at the Schmausemühle, at Waldeck Castle, and directly within the destination village of Morshausen; wild camping is prohibited.
