Saar-Hunsrück-Steig Stage 11: Morbach - Kempfeld

This route follows stage 11 of the certified Saar-Hunsrück-Steig premium trail, connecting Morbach with Kempfeld on a scenic and panoramic section. The hike starts at the Ortelsbruch nature reserve and climbs onto the heights of the Idarwald forest, offering wide views across the Hunsrück region toward the Moselle River. After a descent past an idyllic pond perfect for a break, the trail reaches Langweiler, which opens up wonderful distant views of the Steinbach Reservoir and Wildenburg Castle. The route then traverses the Krahloch Geopark and ascends to the impressive Kirschweiler Festung rock formation, located deep within the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. A scenic descent via switchbacks, towering trees, and rock formations leads into the Idarbach Valley, before a climb through gigantic quartzite scree fields (Rosselhalden) reaches the historic Wildenburg Castle and its wildlife park. From the castle, a short access trail leads to the destination in Kempfeld. Cozy refreshments and accommodations are available in Morbach, Langweiler, and at the stage destination in Kempfeld; wild camping is strictly prohibited within the national park.
