Short volcano adventure hike at the Kalem volcano near Birresborn, Rhineland-Palatinate.
To the west of Birresborn rises a 600,000-year-old volcano - the Kalem volcano. It is one of the largest and oldest volcanoes in the Volcanic Eifel. Its mighty, glowing hot lava flow rolled from the lava vent at the summit of the Salem down into the primeval valley of the Kill.
The circular trail starts at Birresborn railroad station and leads uphill from there via the Winkler Weg to the volcano. Most of the way is through forest on narrow paths.
