On the König Ludwig way

This historic and scenically delightful loop leads through the rolling hinterland of the Palatinate Forest near Edenkoben. The trail explores the area around the summer residence of the Bavarian King Ludwig I, the Villa Ludwigshöhe, following a diverse mixture of broad forestry roads, narrow woodland paths, and sunny vineyard tracks. A central highlight is the view from the castle plateau across the Rhine plain to the Odenwald mountains, as well as the passage through sweet chestnut forests, which exude a special atmosphere in autumn. In the dense mixed forests and along the forest edges, roe deer, great spotted woodpeckers, and various birds of prey can be brilliantly observed. Due to the moderate climbs to the castle and the Rietburg ruins, the route requires solid basic fitness but is technically straightforward.
