• Trails Closed Due to Wildfires in the Hautes Fagnes : Starting August 14, 2026, several trails in the Hautes Fagnes will be temporarily closed due to a major fire. The closures affect, in particular, the Signal de Botrange, Mont Rigi, and Baraque Michel areas. Check local information before your hike and respect all closures until the trails officially reopen. https://www.ostbelgien.eu/fr/actualites/fiche/2026-08-14/incendie-dans-les-fagnes?
This route starts at a hiking car park in Roetgen, the village with the slogan "Gateway to the Eifel". The car park at the Eupen reservoir is also a good starting point. This part of the Eifel is easily accessible for tourists: There are many (busy) federal roads in the direction of Monschau and Rurstausee. This route tries to avoid such roads. This is largely made possible by the asphalt cycle path, which has been open since May 2011, over the old track bed from Roetgen to Lammersdorf. The cycle path is constantly increasing by 1-3%.
After Lammersdorf it goes up and down the quiet district roads and farm roads in the direction of Steckenborn. Then follows the winding and beautiful descent to the Rursee. These streets can get quite busy on Sundays and public holidays.
