Castle-rich hiking trail along the Ruhr, North Rhine-Westphalia.
The hike can be easily reached by train (Essen-Werden train station) and is very well suited for a day trip from Essen and the surrounding area. Parking is available in the city center for those arriving by car.
The hiking trail starts at Essen-Werden train station. It then leads south out of the city area and along the Ruhr with a fairly steep climb to Herrenburg and the former Jewish cemetery. Further south you pass the Alteburg and Oefte Castle. From the reservoir in Kettwig, it's quite relaxed and flat on the opposite side of the river on the towpath back to Werden. There are numerous campsites along the route.
