What better way to experience the Southern Flinders Ranges than to hike to the summit of the aptly named Mount Remarkable.
From the Melrose park entrance, this loop combines both the North and South Mount Remarkable tracks to form a varied and challenging 14km hike with a culmination at the 960m summit. Views are most notable on your way up and down, with the true summit not offering much for dramatic views. That being said, the views along the way are certainly worth the effort. Expect a...

The Hidden Gorge Hike is a spectacular and iconic loop walk in Mount Remarkable National Park south of Port Augusta in South Australia.
You can choose to complete the loop in either direction. However, most visitors find that clockwise is the best. Going clockwise allows you to knock out the uphill section first, hopefully in the cool of the morning.
Along the more comprehensive fire trail, you'll have great views from the Battery Ridge out over the Spencer Gulf. As you enter Hidden Gorge,...

This is a wonderful and relaxing walk along the banks of Mambray Creek to a great view over the valley and the Battery Ridge.
The walk follows steady terrain along the river and then a steep climb at the end that goes up a fire trail to the Sugar Gum Lookout. The walk is mostly easy terrain and has lots of wildlife spotting opportunities.

Awesome hike up Mount Remarkable, not too far from Port Augusta, South Australia. The trail starts and ends at the trailhead near Melrose Campground, where several other tracks can also be accessed.
The trail up to the summit is long and slow with a steady gradient winding around the side of the mountain. The terrain is varied from lush green carpet, rocky hillsides with broken slate, low-lying bushland and expansive dry eucalypt forest.

This return option of the greater Hidden Gorge Hike is a shorter option for those looking to maximise their time in the Alligator Creek gorge.
Beginning from the Mambray Creek campground and car park it follows the Mambray Valley before turning up into the Alligator Creek drainage. This route begins its return from the Hidden Campsite, but visitors can continue on to complete either the Hidden Gorge Hike loop or connect all the way to Alligator Gorge in the northern section of the park.

This is section 44 of the Heysen Trail and connects the town of Melrose to either Stony Creek Hut or simply Alligator Gorge Road.
You can leave a car at Alligator Gorge Road to shuttle this section if you are not continuing on the next sections. Take your time after Grays Hut to locate the correct trail as there are some indistinct roo tracks that look appealing but will lead you astray.

There are two sections of this hike. The Baroota Hike section is mostly flat and first takes an out and back detour to the Old Baroota Cemetery, then turns around to follow the Mambray Creek out toward the Mambray Creek Campgrounds. The campground is a good place to stop and use the facilities before continuing onto the Daveys Gully loop, which has more undulating terrain with a gentle gradient as the trail follows the gully of the Mambray Creek. On this hike through native bushland, you will...
