Lake Gerold

This hike leads around the Geroldsee, also known as the Wagenbrüchsee, which is considered one of the most beautiful moorland lakes in the Alpine foothills. The route starts in the small village of Gerold near Krün and leads along gentle paths through the famous hummocky meadows of the Alpenwelt Karwendel. This undulating landscape was formed during the last ice age and is now home to a variety of plants worth protecting, such as gentian, orchids and colourful mountain meadow flowers in late summer. Grey herons and great crested grebes can often be seen in the reed beds on the banks, while deer and, with luck, even chamois can be seen on the nearby rocky slopes in the surrounding forests. As the paths are mostly flat and well-surfaced, comfortable hiking boots are all you need for this relaxed walk. The reflection of the Karwendel mountains in the emerald green water makes the lake an unforgettable experience for nature lovers.
