Circular
Popular circular hike in the Upper Bavarian Forest Nature Park, Bavaria.
You walk along the main road through Rittsteig, turn right after the church (car park) into Oberkaltenhofstraße and walk along it to a hill with a group of death boards, the Schusterkreuz. From here you have a good view of the village of Rittsteig and a glimpse of Neukirchen b.Hl.Blut and the Hohenbogen-Winkel. Walk along the road for a while and then turn left into a meadow, walk to the edge of the forest, past a rest area (here you have a view as far as Klatovy in the Czech Republic). Continue through the forest to Oberkaltenhof (a hamlet with 3 farms). Here you stay on the path through the Grasseihof (farm) and walk past a game reserve to the edge of the forest. Turn right at the raised hide and walk - sometimes quite steeply downhill - through the forest to the road to Schicherhof (from Oberkaltenhof to Schicherhofstraße, Nk22 and Nk6 run together). Turn right here, soon pass the Büchermühle inn and continue along the road to Buchermühlwäldchen; keep right here. The path now climbs quite steeply for approx. 300 metres. After this ascent, you return to Rittsteig via a meadow path. Alternatively, you can take the slightly shorter tarmac road in the direction of Rittsteig.
Highlights of the hike:
- Oberkaltenhof
- Buchermühle mill
- Rittsteig village square
