From the Wachterl car park, the path leads briefly in the direction of the Schwarzbachalm. Eventually you leave the wide forest road and turn right onto the increasingly narrow paths of the Wachtelsteig. The path, which is very steep in places, winds its way up through the forest via numerous wooden steps and ladders. You pass the ruined Obere Schwaigealm and reach the Reiter Alm plateau. Up and down through the Swiss stone pine and mountain pine forests of the plateau and a stretch through the famous Saugasse, you finally reach the Neue Traunsteiner Hütte.
