This route is a popular panoramic hiking trail above the mountaineering village of Ramsau and is known as the "Soleleitungsweg". This is a section of the overall trail that was built by the engineer Georg Friedrich von Reichenbach on behalf of the Bavarian King Max I from 1816 to 1817, after the formerly independent prince provostship of Berchtesgaden became Bavarian in 1810. He built the 29 kilometre long brine pipeline from the Berchtesgaden salt mine via Ramsau to the saltworks in Reichenhall. In the process, he had to overcome height differences of up to 356 metres with the pump he had developed. The brine pipeline was in operation for a total of 144 years and was only shut down in 1927. Today, the well-preserved and, above all, almost flat path that runs along the former route is an excellent place for a walk. The most popular witnesses to the past are a short walk-through tunnel and wooden pipes, known as "Deicheln", through which the brine once flowed.
