This route leads from Mittenwald to Scharnitz, passing the Leutaschklamm gorge, the Isar river and the Porta Claudia fortress. The starting point is located south-east of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in the Isar valley at the foot of the Wetterstein mountains. To the south of the town is the attractive Leutaschklamm gorge (note seasonal opening times).
This moderately strenuous circular tour, which crosses the German-Austrian border and gains around 290 metres in altitude, is an excellent combination of a romantic hike through a gorge, along a beautiful river and a visit to an old fortress ruin.
The route leads from Mittenwald (Germany) to the Leutaschklamm gorge, from the Leutaschklamm gorge to the Porta Claudia fortress, from the Porta Claudia fortress to Scharnitz (Austria).
