Mainly on separate cycle paths, country lanes and forest tracks, sometimes also tracks. Mostly through the countryside, through the green belts, nature reserves and parks between the towns of Herne, Bochum, Castrop, Witten and Dortumund. Parts of the route run along the old R cycle paths (e.g. R10), which are no longer maintained or signposted throughout NRW. The starting point is the Gysenberg in Herne, e.g. car park at the ice rink. Through the forest of the Gysenbergpark uphill, via Bövinghauser Hellweg north past BO-Gerthe, behind the twin water towers downhill towards Castrop, shortly before Merklinde turn right past horse farms towards DO-Bövinghausen, through housing estates and past the railway station to the Zollern colliery, Shortly afterwards, descend along field paths into Dellwigtal, then northwards via Brandheide to...

The surface constantly changes from side roads, cycle paths, tracks and forest paths. When the ground is damp, some of the forest paths are muddy. The bike has to be carried briefly on three steps. Refreshment stops are available along the route.
