This route leads to the bizarre rock formations of the Zittau Mountains. The rock path was formed millions of years ago in the Tertiary period, when hot lava was able to penetrate to the surface through a fissure in deeper layers of the earth. The adjacent sandstone solidified so that it weathered more slowly than the neighbouring rock, resulting in the bizarre and enchanting rock formations that can be admired today.
Refreshments are available en route. The start is at the railway station in the spa town of Oybin, so one can travel there and back in comfort by train.
