Saar-Hunsrück-Steig Etappe 13: Idar-Oberstein - Herrstein

This route follows stage 13 of the certified Saar-Hunsrück-Steig premium trail, connecting Idar-Oberstein with the picturesque village of Herrstein on a demanding and rugged section. The overall distance and numerous steep climbs make this hike a true athletic challenge. Right at the start in Idar-Oberstein, the famous Felsenkirche (Church of the Rock), spectacularly built directly into a cliff face, serves as an iconic highlight. After leaving the gemstone town, the trail follows natural paths through pristine forest stretches, deep stream valleys, and scenic ridges that repeatedly open up fantastic views over the Nahe Valley. Passing striking rock formations, the route finally leads into historic Herrstein, which enchants visitors with its beautifully restored half-timbered houses. Excellent refreshments and cozy accommodations are available in wide variety within Idar-Oberstein as well as directly within the historic center of Herrstein; wild camping is prohibited.
