Erlebnisweg Sieg: Erzquellweg

Picturesque and cultural-historical circular hike near Mudersbach, Rhineland-Palatinate. This idyllic circular route is all about mining, giant trees and beer. The region was home to the first ironworks, which produced steel until the 1980s. The giant trees are located along the path in the Giebelwald - a mountain ridge almost completely covered with forest, which flattens out on all sides from the highest point (the Giebelberg). In the Giebelwald you will also find the ore spring, from which the local Erzquell brewery takes the water for brewing beer. The hike mostly leads through the forest - every now and then you can catch beautiful views over meadows and fields. A good basic level of fitness is required, as you have to overcome a few meters of altitude on the almost twelve-kilometer route. Information boards along the route and the remains of the Iron Age La Tène ovens provide information about the importance of the millennia-old settlement and use of the region's mineral resources.
