This route leads from Schmidt down to Heimbach and up to the Mariawald monastery. After descending the “Stationenweg” of the monastery, which is peppered with information boards, it goes in the direction of Schwammenauel, then along the Rursee and from “Eschauel” back to Schmidt. During the season from April to October, a shortcut can be taken by boat from Schwammenauel. Due to the steep climbs on the way to the Mariawald monastery and on the way back from Eschauel, a moderate level of fitness is required. The Mariawald monastery is a popular place for hikers to treat themselves to a pea soup.
