This hike leads through an important water source area of the Odenwald. Just above the starting point at the town hall in Grasellenbach-Hammelbach runs the watershed between the Neckar and the Rhine. Thus Ulfenbach, which begins in Hammelbach, flows into the Neckar. The more distant Weschnitzquelle flows into the Rhine.
During the hike through Grasellenbach-Hammelbach, it is worth a short visit to the gothic chapel ruins from the 14th century. Opposite the ruins are the remains of a former prison. Leaving the village, the water path leads past the Weschnitzquelle, which gave the Weschnitztal its name. The water source was mentioned as "Wisgoz" as early as 795 in the Lorsch Codex.
From the next hill you'll have a beautiful view back to Grasellenbach-Hammelbach and to the northwest in the Weschnitztal and Lindenfels. Impressive is the natural monument "Eselstein" in the forest - a huge granite formation. Soon follows the "Brandschneiderkreuz", in the immediate vicinity of the Fahrenbacher Kopf, where, according to legend, in the Walpurgisnacht witches are said to have met to dance.
The quiet nature of the landscape is very different from that of the Tromm, the highest part of the Überwald.
