This 1st stage starts at the historic market square in Zierenberg. It heads in a southerly direction to Schneckenberg. Sure-footedness is required because of the crossing of a basalt debris field ( "Blaue Steine" -"blue stones"). From the Schreckenberg tower, a fantastic view of the Habichtswald forest can be enjoyed. Through mixed forests and the largest juniper heath in Europe, the tour is a real experience - especially when the orchids are in bloom. The challenging route leads to the former Celtic ramparts of the Dörnberg. The ascent rewards you with a breathtaking view from the mountain plateau. If the glider airfield is in operation, it might be necessary to take a detour (marked with a purple dot). There is still plenty of beautiful nature and impressive views to experience before reaching the Hercules. Refreshments are available along the way in cafés such as the one at the Habichtswald Nature Park Centre.
