The Research Trail in Geisenheim invites visitors to experience science up close: On a short tour through the “Fuchsberg” vineyard, hikers learn how researchers at Geisenheim University are developing concepts for climate, biodiversity, and sustainable viticulture. Green markers and information boards provide details about the experimental plots. QR codes allow visitors to access short videos in which the researchers clearly explain their projects and offer fascinating insights into their work. Topics range from the effects of elevated CO₂ concentrations on grapevines to innovative technologies such as solar-powered viticulture systems, and include nature-based measures for biodiversity, soil, and water management. You’ll also discover historical vine training systems, the design of wild hedgerows as habitats for animals, and solutions for combating pests—all presented clearly and explained in an easy-to-understand way. The research trail combines knowledge with an experience of nature: Along the route, you can enjoy the vineyard landscape of the Rheingau, confront the challenges of climate change, and experience how science, nature, and viticulture are shaping the wines and cultural landscapes of the future together. The trail winds through the diverse vineyard landscape above the campus and can be explored at your own pace—whether as a short stroll or a longer walk with sweeping views of the Rhine. Rest stops along the route, as well as the trail’s proximity to the town of Geisenheim, allow for flexible planning and combine nature exploration, physical activity, and learning in a pleasant way.
