Our youth trail starts at the youth hostel Rüdesheim (www.ruedesheim.jugendherberge.de), which got its shame of an old group accommodation from the 60s. After passing under the old railway viaduct, we walk down the stony, old vineyard path to Rüdesheim to the parking lot "Am Eibinger Tor". Through the pedestrian zone with numerous shops and souvenir shops we reach the cable car up to the Niederwalddenkmal. One of the highlights of a stay in Rüdesheim am Rhein is a ride on the cabin cable car to the Niederwald monument. The wonderful panoramic view of Rüdesheim's Old Town and the quiet gliding over the green vineyards makes this trip a special experience. The Niederwald Monument was built in the years 1877-1883 to a design by Johannes Schilling from Dresden and is today a meeting place for guests from all over the world. The 38 meter high monument symbolizes the reestablishment of the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Main character is the 640 -weight Germania with the imperial crown in the raised right and the Imperial sword in the left hand. From Niederwalddenkmal offers a magnificent view of the Rhine and Nahetal. Just behind the monument is the Adlerwarte. 15 different species of birds of prey, currently 30-35 birds, can be admired here. The hunting lodge Niederwald (www.niederwald.de) is only a few minutes walk away. There is a small but fine petting zoo with goats, sheep and deer. Now we can float down to Assmannshausen by chairlift or we can hike up to the small winegrowing town of Assmannshausen and back to Rüdesheim via the famous Höllenberg vineyard. On the numerous benches with magnificent views of the Rhine you can rest majestically or let the day fade away in one of the numerous wine bars.
