After 250 years, even the memory is hardly frightening and so Trenck's Pandurs were able to lend their name to one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Germany. Their scimitar became the marker that leads hikers on a varied route through the low mountain landscape of the Bavarian Forest, past towns and castles once threatened by the Pandurs. The Pandurensteig connects two popular hiking routes, the Pfahlwanderweg and the Ilztalwanderweg. On the Pile Hiking Trail between Thierlstein and Weißenstein, the pile, a 150 km long quartz vein, which enjoys a worldwide reputation as a geological natural monument, makes an impressive appearance in numerous places: for example at the "Devil's Wall" near Cham, in the "Großer Pfahl" nature reserve near Viechtach or at the ruins of Weißenstein Castle built on pile rocks. The Pandurensteig trail leads through the densely wooded mountain landscape in the foothills of the Bavarian Forest National Park to the River Ilz, which takes hikers through a wild and romantic natural river valley to Passau. The Pandurensteig is divided into 8 (daily) stages, but can also be planned individually according to personal requirements. The trail can be started anywhere, as can the direction of travel.
