This route is Stage 7 of the Marien-Wanderweg and leads from the ducal town of Burghausen to the Bavarian pilgrimage site of Altötting. The Marien-Wanderweg is a 130-kilometer (81-mile) pilgrimage route from Sankt Marienkirchen am Hausruck in Upper Austria to Altötting in Bavaria, which is usually completed in 7 or 8 stages.
From the world’s longest castle in Burghausen, the trail leads along farm roads and side streets, passing through Mehring and Hohenwart. The route then follows shaded forest trails through the extensive Öttinger Forest before ending at the well-known Kapellplatz, with the Chapel of Grace at its center, in the heart of Altötting. Accommodations are available at numerous inns, guesthouses, and hotels in both Burghausen and Altötting; wild camping is prohibited in Bavaria. Since there are no reliable water sources in the forest, you must carry enough drinking water with you. Regional trains and buses operated by Deutsche Bahn connect the two stage locations.
